Easter homework

Please make notes on the three examples of print media representations of women that you found for your last homework and bring these in for the first lesson back after Easter. We will be using these, plus our class examples to produce an assessed piece of writing.

Additional Reading/Analysis

Some texts that will be useful for your final exam:

The Beauty Myth by Naomi Wolf. This book tackles the compulsion many women feel to pursue beauty and the role that business and the media play in it. You may be able to learn more about Wolf's main arguments simply by Googling it. However, if you are serious about a top grade, this is required reading.

Miss Representation - documentary on Netflix that we watched in class. This should be re-watched and notes made on what it has to say about this subject.

Women's Pictures: Feminism and the Cinema - Annette Kuhn. This book charts the changes in feminist theory of the media over the 80s and 90s. It is a academic book and heavy going in places, but may be worth referring to in passing.

Any guide to Feminism and Post-Feminism. There are lots available. Go and have a look in Waterstones.

Furthermore, look for more current media representations of women in all areas of the media and make notes/comments about what you perceive. Remember to use media terminology and theory as often as possible in this.

Homework - due 27th March

Please find at least three different newspaper representations of women. These can be about the way women are represented and issues to do with feminism or they can be just good or bad examples of representation itself. Be prepared to discuss why you chose them with the class.
